What a ceramic coating actually does
Four things worth paying for. Everything else is marketing.
Show-car gloss
The coating fills and levels the surface at a microscopic level, so light reflects evenly. Dark paint in particular reads deeper than it did new.
Water and dirt slide off
A hydrophobic surface means rain sheets off instead of sitting, and road grime has far less to grab. Washing gets faster and safer for the paint.
UV and oxidation shield
San Diego paint fades from the top down. The coating takes the UV load so your clear coat does not chalk, and reds and blacks hold their colour.
Years, not months
A pro-grade coating runs three to seven years depending on the product, your washing habits and whether the car lives outside.
What is ceramic coating?
Ceramic coating is a liquid polymer — silicon dioxide based — that is applied by hand and cures into a hard, transparent layer chemically bonded to your clear coat. It is not a wax and it is not a sealant. Wax sits on top of the paint and washes away. A coating becomes part of the surface until it is polished off.
What you notice day to day is how the car behaves. Water pulls into tight beads and leaves. Bug splatter and bird droppings sit on the coating instead of etching the clear coat, so long as you rinse them off. The paint stops feeling rough after a week of freeway driving.
What a coating does not do is stop physical damage. A rock at freeway speed will still chip your paint — that is what paint protection film is for. Plenty of our customers run both: PPF on the front end, coating over the whole car.
Why coating matters more here than most places

The sun never really lets up
San Diego gets UV load year round, not just in summer. That is what oxidises clear coat and fades red and black paint first.
California tint law pushes heat inside
State law caps front side windows at 70% VLT, so you cannot solve cabin heat with dark film alone. More heat and light reach your interior and your paint than in states with looser limits.
Coastal air is hard on a finish
Salt carries inland further than people expect. Combined with hard water spotting from sprinklers and washes, an uncoated finish takes on water marks quickly.
How the job runs
Most vehicles are with us one to three days depending on how much correction the paint needs.
1. Assess and quote
We look at the paint in person, check for swirls, etching and previous polish work, and tell you what tier the car actually needs.
2. Decontaminate and correct
Wash, clay, iron removal, then machine polishing where the paint needs it. A coating locks in whatever is underneath, so this step decides the result.
3. Apply the coating
Applied panel by panel by hand in a controlled bay, then levelled before it flashes. This is slow work and it is where the money goes.
4. Cure and inspect
The coating cures at the shop before the car leaves. We walk the finish with you under lights and hand over the aftercare instructions.

How much does ceramic coating cost in San Diego?
Our packages start at $700 for an express single-layer coating, $1,400 for paint correction plus a multi-layer coating, and $2,500 for our elite tier. The variable is nearly always paint condition — a two-year-old car that has been through automatic washes needs more correction than a new one, and correction is the labour-heavy part. We quote after seeing the vehicle.
How long does ceramic coating last in San Diego?
Three to seven years with a professional-grade product. What shortens it is automatic car washes with brushes, harsh alkaline soaps, and parking outside year round without ever decontaminating the surface. We cover all of that in our guide on how long ceramic coating lasts here.
Do I need paint correction first?
If your paint has swirl marks, light scratches or water spot etching, yes — a coating locks in whatever is under it, including the flaws. On a brand new car straight from the dealer we can often skip heavy correction, though dealer lots do leave wash marks more often than people expect. We tell you honestly which one you need.
Can you coat a brand new car?
Yes, and it is the best time to do it. New paint needs the least correction, so more of your money goes into protection instead of repair. Bring it in before the first automatic wash.
Is ceramic coating worth it on a Tesla or EV?
Teslas in particular benefit. The factory paint is softer than most and marks easily, so a coating plus correct wash technique makes a visible difference over a few years. We work on Model 3, Y, S, X and Cybertruck regularly — see our Tesla services.
How do I wash a ceramic coated car?
Two-bucket hand wash with a pH-neutral soap, a clean microfibre mitt, and dry with a plush towel or filtered blower. Skip brush-style automatic washes entirely — they put in the swirls the coating is meant to prevent. A touchless wash is acceptable between hand washes.
Does ceramic coating stop rock chips?
No. A coating is measured in microns and is a chemical barrier, not an impact barrier. If rock chips are the concern, paint protection film is the answer, and many customers run film on the front end with a coating over everything.
Ceramic coating or paint protection film?
Different jobs. PPF absorbs physical impact — chips, road rash, light scratches. Ceramic repels contaminants and holds gloss. If you can only do one and you drive the freeway daily, start with film on the front end. If your paint is sound and you want it to stay easy to clean and glossy, start with the coating.

Yes. Warranty length depends on the coating system and the tier you choose, and it assumes you follow the aftercare instructions we hand over at pickup. We go through the exact terms with you before you book.
